What do you get when you put 40,000 outdoor enthusiasts and professionals packed together in just a little more than 500,000 square feet of space, in a beautiful city, nestled against the Wasatch Mountain Range…? The biggest outdoor industry trade show in the world! The Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, or “OR” as it’s affectionately called, is the leading show in the world for all things related to life engaged in the great outdoors, on land or on water.
Manufacturers, retailers, media and athletes from over 30 countries gather twice a year at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, to sell, shop and review the latest gear, apparel, accessories and even food, related to every outdoor sport and lifestyle surrounding them. From rock climbing and extreme kayaking to utility knives and beef jerky, if you’re thinking about packing it up for your next 1-hour or 1-month excursion into the great unknown, it’s there!
Ocean Minded was there too, showing off our brand-new collection for Spring and Summer 2013. This year, in part to accommodate the exploding stand up paddle (SUP) scene, the show added an additional 50,000 square feet of space in a pavilion tent just across the street from the Salt Palace. Ocean Minded was parked right square in the middle of the new pavilion, amongst brands like Riviera Paddlesurf, SUPLove, Sandwich Island Composites and Hinano Tahiti Apparel.
Despite being off the main floor of the show, there was a great vibe and a lot of energy surrounding the exciting growth in SUP. The OR show creates the perfect opportunity for brands to not only meet with current or potentially new retail partners, but also provides a one-stop shop for representatives of the press to see what the “best foot forward” (pardon the pun) looks like for the upcoming season. Non-profit organizations and environmental agencies are also in attendance at OR, spreading the word of their initiatives and efforts that directly impact the land and waterways we call our playgrounds.
Now, there’s already going to be plenty of noise and activity when you pack that many people into one place, but that doesn’t stop brands from doing all kinds of things to help draw just a little more attention to themselves. If you’ve ever shopped Costco on a “Sample Sunday,” imagine that on steroids! From simple shwag, to waffle and coffee stations in the morning, to soft serve ice cream machines, to tent-pitching contests and happy hour raffle giveaways, OR is one event, any waterman, woman or outdoor enthusiast would enjoy.
