No matter where you live on this beautiful Earth, it is always important to Be Ocean Minded™. A few months back, Ocean Minded joined MillerCoors for a beach cleanup at La Esperanza Bay in Cataño, Puerto Rico during Great Water Month. With just 52 volunteers in Waveseeker Slip Ons, we collected over 900 pounds of trash in a matter of hours. In addition to collecting waste, planting and water quality testing was also conducted as part of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program’s rescue efforts.
According to the EPA, or the Environmental Protection Agency, this tropical island estuary contains coral communities, seagrass beds and mangrove forests, so it is very important to try to”balance economic needs and resource protection through environmentally sensitive tourism.” This island might look pretty from the sand, but below the surface lives waste that is “weakening islet function as a natural barrier that protects coastal communities of Cataño.”
Take que from the San Juan Bay rescue program this Trashless Tuesday and be Ocean Minded. Together we can keep our communities safe and our beaches clean. For more information on the San Juan Bay Estuary, click here.
