Since the Polynesians rode their first waves on boards carved from wood, shaping has always been considered a true art form. These hand-crafted surfboards provide professional surfer’s like Ocean Minded Ambassador, Daniel Jones, with the tools they need to succeed, and riding these works of art is something every surfer takes pride in. Discover how Daniel landed his treasured board shaped by one of Hawaii’s most influential surfers and legendary pioneer, Owl Chapman (and learn how you can be so lucky and get one too!).
By Daniel Jones
One day, in 2011, I was in Owl Chapman’s shaping bay and he was making this awesome looking single fin. It had a very deep single concave running out of the tail and I immediately told Owl that I really wanted to try it. Owl responded, saying that I should definitely try one. “It will blow your mind,” he said and without skipping a beat, I asked him what size I should get.
“5’7″ – I’ll make you the same board I made for Michael Ho in 1979 for the Stubbies Pro at Burleigh Heads,” Owl told me. It was perfect.
The next day I went back to Owl’s shaping bay. He had been working on the template for the board for 2 hours and said that I needed to finish it. I was really nervous because I didn’t want to screw up, especially since he had been working on for 2 hours! Despite the pressure, I took over where Owl had left off and before I knew it, the board was complete.
Although you may not be as lucky as Daniel and sit in the room with Owl himself and he hand-shapes your custom board, you can always order one at Seasword Surfboards.
